About Maldives

Discover the Maldives: A Tropical Paradise

The Maldives is often called "the tropical paradise," and for good reason. This breathtaking island nation, located in the Indian Ocean, is a dream destination known for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. Whether you're planning a honeymoon, a family vacation, or an adventure-filled getaway, the Maldives offers an unforgettable experience.

A Unique Island Nation

The Maldives is an archipelago made up of around 1,190 islands, spread across 20 atolls. These islands are naturally formed in a circular shape, resembling a string of pearls when viewed from above. The largest atoll, Huvadhu, covers approximately 6,486 square miles, while the smallest, Gnaviyani Atoll, spans just 4.81 square miles. The capital city, Malé, serves as the heart of the Maldives and is home to the country's main international airport, Malé International Airport.

Breathtaking Beaches & Marine Life

One of the Maldives' most remarkable features is its stunning beaches, lined with soft, powdery white sand. Whether you choose to relax under the shade of swaying palm trees or take a leisurely stroll along the shore, the beauty of these beaches is truly mesmerizing.

The Maldives is also a haven for marine life, boasting over 5,000 coral reefs teeming with colorful fish, vibrant corals, and diverse marine species. It is no surprise that diving and snorkeling here are considered world-class experiences. The underwater world of the Maldives is filled with manta rays, whale sharks, sea turtles, and an abundance of reef fish, making every dive a breathtaking adventure.

Getting Around & Exploring the Islands

Most visitors arrive at Malé International Airport, located on Hulhule Island, just 2 kilometers from the capital. The airport is well-equipped with modern facilities, including duty-free shops, restaurants, banks, and medical services. From the airport, resort transfers are typically arranged in advance, with options including speedboats, traditional dhonis, or seaplanes. The Maldives has one of the largest seaplane fleets in the world, offering passengers an incredible bird's-eye view of the islands below.

What to Pack

The Maldives enjoys warm weather year-round, making light, breathable clothing the best choice. Essentials include:

  • Swimwear, sunglasses, and sunscreen

  • Light cotton and linen clothing

  • Sandals for walking on compact sand or paved streets

  • A hat or cap for sun protection

  • Mosquito repellent if traveling to multiple islands

Travel & Visa Information

Tourists are granted a 30-day visa upon arrival with a valid passport. Extensions can be requested through the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Malé. Certain items, such as firearms, drugs, pornography, and religious idols, are strictly prohibited. While alcohol is available at resorts, visitors are not allowed to bring it into the country.

Health & Safety

Travelers coming from infected regions must present an international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever and cholera. The Maldives Tourism Promotion Board has a counter at the airport to assist visitors with information and brochures.

Before leaving, visitors can enjoy duty-free shopping at Malé International Airport. The departure terminal offers a variety of international brands, including perfumes, electronics, jewelry, fashion accessories, and souvenirs.
